FTC Issues Alert on Cryptocurrency Romance Scams

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a cautionary message regarding cryptocurrency romance scammers who masquerade as love interests while offering investment advice. The FTC stresses the importance of recognizing the risks involved and advises individuals to promptly report any suspicious activity to prevent others from falling victim to these scams.

According to the FTC, these scammers manipulate emotions to establish a false sense of trust, making it easier for victims to believe in their expertise in cryptocurrency investments. Despite appearing as caring romantic partners, these individuals are nothing more than fraudsters aiming to exploit unsuspecting victims financially.

The deceptive tactics employed by these scammers typically begin with unsolicited contact through social media platforms. By carefully studying victims' profiles, scammers create an illusion of intimacy and reliability. Once a relationship is formed, the conversation shifts towards investments, with scammers claiming to prioritize the victim's financial well-being. However, their true intention is solely focused on personal financial gain.

If someone you meet online offers assistance with cryptocurrency investments, it is likely a scam, warns the FTC. These fraudsters promise high returns, assert that there is no risk involved, and offer to provide investment advice. Nevertheless, the FTC emphasizes that all investments carry inherent risks, and any guarantees of returns are fraudulent. Scammers often request immediate money transfers via gift cards, payment apps, or cryptocurrency - common methods used by fraudsters. If you encounter such solicitations, it is crucial to cease all communication, report the scammer to the relevant social media platform, and inform the FTC.

In the event that you come across such scams, the FTC advises promptly cutting off all contact with the individual, reporting them to the social media platform, and submitting a report to the FTC. Additionally, sharing this alert on social media can help raise awareness and prevent others from falling prey to these deceitful schemes.
